Quick start: your first managed guest

From a fresh install to your first managed guest in four steps.

  1. First login

    Section titled “First login”

    Open the panel at your server’s IP and sign in with the admin username and password you chose during the install. Under Profile you can change the password and enable two-factor authentication (TOTP).

  2. Add a Proxmox node

    Section titled “Add a Proxmox node”

    Open Nodes and click Add node. The wizard has three steps:

    • Connection: enter a name, the hostname or IP, the API port (8006), user, realm and password, and whether to verify the TLS certificate (turn it off for self-signed certificates). Click Test & Scan to check reachability, the Proxmox VE version, the nodes and storage. Connecting to one member of a cluster adds every node of that cluster. The password is stored encrypted and never shown again.
    • Agent setup: NexoVirt connects to the node over SSH once to install its agent. Use the root SSH password (used only for this bootstrap, then discarded) or, if password SSH is disabled, add the panel’s public key to /root/.ssh/authorized_keys first. Optionally let the panel install its own SSH key for future agent updates, or remember the root password encrypted.
    • Install & scan: watch the live progress while the agent is installed, started and scanned. When it is done, click Go to node.

  3. Check the node

    Section titled “Check the node”

    The node page shows live CPU, memory, storage and network charts, its guests, storage and networks. Inventory and metrics fill in within a few minutes as the background collectors run.

  4. Create your first guest

    Section titled “Create your first guest”

    Open Guests and click New guest. The wizard walks through Placement (node, or Automatic to let the panel pick the best one, and the type: LXC container or QEMU VM), Resources (a plan or custom values), Operating system, Network, Access (root password and/or SSH keys) and an Overview. Click Create guest and a live page follows the provisioning until the guest is ready.

What to set up next

Once your first guest runs, these are the usual next steps:

  • IP addresses: define an IP zone so new guests get a static IPv4 or IPv6 address instead of DHCP. See Networking & NAT.
  • Plans: bundle cores, memory, disk and traffic into reusable plans, optionally with expiry and enforcement. See Plans & quotas.
  • Customers: create customer accounts, assign guests to them and enable the self-service portal. See Users & portal.
  • Alerts: check the default alert rules and add an email address or a Discord or Google Chat webhook. See Alerts & webhooks.
  • Backups: connect a Proxmox Backup Server so guests can be restored, or failed over to another host. See Backups.
  • Updates: decide whether bug-fix releases install automatically. See Updates.
